Young people gather for Youth Congress

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Youth representatives of various sectors in the province gathered here for the first ever "Youth Congress" last Friday and Saturday.

The two-day event was attended by mostly youth leaders from various youth organizations and even representatives from the indigenous sector. The event, held from December 7 to 8 at Benigno Aquino Hall was part of the provincial plan to organize and create a Provincial Youth Council (PYC) that would later form part of the Multi Sectoral Council.

The PYC is envisioned to institutionalize youth participation in the provincial and local governance. Once organized, the council would then set for a three-year goal and formulate its own vision and mission.

The participants included newly elected Youth Council officers and members of religious youth organizations. The event included seminar-workshops on Disaster Preparedness and Management and tackled the issues on the preservation and promotion of Kapampangan Culture.

The provincial government has recognized the relative impact of the youth sector in provincial and national issues. In 2004 the Youth (15 to 25 years old) numbered a total of 23.4 million which is around 28.3 percent of the entire population. Recent statistics place the number at roughly 36 percent. A significant block of the youth in the entire country could found in the areas of the National Capital Region, Southern Luzon Provinces and Central Luzon areas.

The youth of Pampanga, along with that of Pangasinan, make up for the most number of youths in the Central Luzon Plains. Officials here are optimistic that the youth would be able to effect change in the provincial setting. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
