City holds contest on eco-friendly decors

AS PART of its pro-environment programs, the Angeles City Government launched an inter-department Christmas decor-making contest with the use of recycled materials.
The traditional "Christmas Decorating Contest," according to the City Tourism Office, has become a "tradition" of the City Government.
The contest features the use of recycled materials that are often used in different departments of City Hall. Decors from mistletoes made from news papers, Belens (Christmas mangers) and colored bottles now line up the different offices here.
Officials said most of the recyclable materials usually used in the decorations are scrap papers from inter-office memoranda, old newspapers and documents. The materials used should strictly be "inexpensive and recycled."
The decors would be judged according to the uniqueness, recycled material used, and the general message that the decors give.
The awarding ceremonies that would be held on December 21 will feature prices from P15,000 (first place), P10,000 (second place) and P8,000 in the inter-office category, while the winners in the inter-department category will get P20,000 (fist place), P15,000 (second place) and P10,000 (third place).
However, a City Hall employee was surprised about the sudden "decrease" in the initial announcement of the prices for the event. In a letter from the Office of the City Mayor, the prices were originally pegged at P30,000 for the first prize, P20,000 for the second, P15,000 for the third for the inter-office category alone.
Despite this, the contest was participated in by the rank and file and various departments of the City Government that were somehow attracted by the prices and the joy of teamwork.
The contest aims to propagate among City Hall employees and visitors the advocacy on using ecologically-friendly and recycled materials to minimize garbage build up and help the environment.
