Mall launches farmer-training program

STA. RITA --Taking into a new approach in corporate social responsibility, SM Foundation, Inc. reaches out to some 100 local farmers in Pampanga through its "Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan" Farmers' Training Program launched recently at the Bangon Multi-Purpose Cooperative Farm in Barangay San Matias here.
In partnership with Harbest Agribusiness Corporation, the Provincial Government of Pampanga and the Municipal Government here, the project will consist of a 90-day hands-on training program in organic farming until February next year. The program aims to introduce new farming technologies through series of trainings and seminars, and at the same time help them market their products better to buyers.
Harbest Agribusiness Corporation, through its president Arsenio Barcelona, brought in agriculturists to conduct the training sessions and provided seedlings for the actual hands-on farming modules for the beneficiaries.
Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio joined SM Foundation Executive Directors Connie Angeles and Linda Atayde, and SM executives led by Bien Mateo during the ceremonial transplanting of seeds which was held last November 23 at the Bangon Multi-Purpose Cooperative Farm in Barangay. San Matias here. The project will culminate with a Harvest Festival on February 2008 at SM City Pampanga.
The Bangon Multi-Purpose Cooperative Farm has been the location of a couple of pioneering projects of the government and the Department of Agriculture focusing on agri-based activities and livelihood projects.
